Dumped

In this transparent epoxy resin reproduction of a classic Brussels trash bin, from a distance, we primarily perceive brightly illuminated colors due to the integrated lighting reflecting on various embedded objects and the light refracted by the scaled surface structure of the waste container. This invites us to experience the work up close, where the 'discarded' objects, fixed in synthetic resin, become individually more recognizable. We observe a swirling spiral of colorful, glossy trinkets that evoke associations with everyday yet transformative events, small dramas from the bustling metropolis. "Dumped" can refer to both the disposal of waste and a failed date. As in other models and sculptures by Philips, besides the joy of creation, a layered cinematic narrative takes precedence, condensed this time into a compact illuminated ready-made monolith: artificially polished melancholy on a concrete pedestal.
