In Fuga Salus

‘The world reveals itself while traveling on foot.’ This versatile project, in collaboration with the Warande in Turnhout, used different viewpoints to look at the research that went into the geographical mapping of De Kempen (region in north-eastern Belgium). The main focus was its characteristic identity, more specifically the contrast between the rural villages and the international European E-roads that intersect the region. While exploring these highways and their surroundings on foot - places people normally rush by at 100 km/h - Philips discovered a new kind of reality. The project was a formative process for works such as Pumpcar, Arbre Magique, and the exhibition concept for Foreign Legion a few years earlier. The title ‘In Fuga Salus’ refers to the coat of arms of Turnhout depicting a fleeing deer, which means as much as: ‘Our salvation lies in fleeing’. An important trigger for this topic was an almost ridiculous national radio broadcast on the refugee crisis: ‘Pedestrians spotted on the emergency lane between Turnhout and Vosselaar.’ This is a symptom of how, over the last decade, issues such as globalization and migration have expanded from an urban to a more local context.
